With its centenary history, USC exhibits its innovative background, with projects such as Virtus, which bridges the gap between academic innovation and the professional audiovisual sector, by researching in high quality virtual production technologies.

Supported by the EU Next Generation fund, Virtus was developed in collaboration with Brainstorm, as technology partner, and Broad Services, as systems integrator. Since its launch in October 2024, when they used hyper-realistic virtual sets created by Argonauts XR, a company specialized in creating scenes for virtual production, Virtus has demonstrated its ability to generate high quality, live virtual content.

Apart from its experience with face-to-face events of all kinds, both corporate presentations and specific events or business meetings, the company’s spirit has always been to stand out from the competition, and for this they have invested in creativity, passion and innovation.

During the pandemic, given the difficulty of maintaining the usual in-person and physical events calendar, Streaming Colombia saw both a crisis and an opportunity, and decided to bet fully on virtual events, an area that they had previously explored. And, after an intense search for a technological partner that could accompany them in their vision, Juan Pablo Prieto Sánchez, CEO and co-founder of this company, decided to bet on Brainstorm’s Edison PRO, a product that at that time was starting its commercial journey, but at the same time was supported by a solid company and its proven advanced technology.

Turning virtual the largest Swiss medical congress

medArt Basel is the largest medical congress in Switzerland. The Basel University Hospital started organising this convention, aimed at the German-speaking medical community 16 years ago. Since then, the congress has evolved from a 100% physical event to a mix of physical event and virtual platform based content and activities. With an average of 2000 professionals attending in person, this year the event had to go fully virtual if they wanted to celebrate it this time, due to the impossibility of hosting a physical event during the pandemic.

In order to achieve its goal, and only a few months before the date of the event, planned for May 5th to the 7th, the organisation got in touch with Nominari Schweiz GmbH, a production company that covers the entire area of video production, being the live streams the core business of the company. Taking into account the demanding expectations of the client, and that the auditorium where they have been hosting the congress does not look too good for a virtual live event, Nominari proposed them the option of deploying virtual production techniques to place the speakers on a virtual set, and the idea was most welcome by the hospital.

Set to providing the best results to the client, Nominari made a quick yet extensive market research and eventually reached out to Markus Wallies of ITcon4media, Brainstorm’s official reseller for the German-speaking region, who managed the request promptly and provided Nominari with a virtual production kit consisting of an InfinitySet 4 TrackFree turn-key solution and a three day long remote training imparted by a Brainstorm application specialist based in Madrid, both in record time.

Thanks to having adopted the virtual form for this year, medArt Basel halved its overall production costs while they doubled the number of registrants of the previous years, reaching the 4000 attendee mark, since the registration fee could be dropped dramatically and attendees could also save on travel costs. When the event was done, a survey among the congress attendees revealed that most of them were so happy about this edition of the congress that they would like next year’s edition to be equally virtual.

The Basel University Hospital was also delighted for doubling the usual number of attendees as well as for the great visual and practical results achieved and how quick and easy was for Nominari to carry out the virtual production and streaming, that they are seriously considering the adoption of this virtual form for the congress for the years to come. For the same reasons, Congrex has also mentioned to Nominari that they are going to offer this new fully virtual way of hosting congresses to their client base of medical institutions all around the world that organise this kind of events.

Replacing a live event with a virtual experience

TD Ameritrade provides its customers with educational events around the country called Market Drives. Each of these events draws several hundreds to a thousand people. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, TD Ameritrade had to cancel four of Market Drive events. To fill this void, Broadcast Management Group (BMG) proposed replacing upcoming Market Drive events with virtual Town Halls events. TD Ameritrade Network (TDAN) agreed, and asked BMG to produce the first event in six days. On Saturday, April 4th, 2020, BMG produced an incredibly successful, four-hour-long, live Town Hall for TDAN at their Chicago Studio. BMG created all of the show graphics, a complete virtual set, and also configured six remote locations. After the success of this event, on May 30th BMG produced the second virtual live event.

Brainstorm has been TD Ameritrade’s trusted virtual set solution over the past three years. So naturally, the Brainstorm Suite was chosen to design, build, and broadcast the virtual environment.

BMG’s creative services team developed a 4-hour live town hall featuring a host, social media correspondent, and six contributors. Both the host and some correspondent were shot in front of a green screen using Brainstorm virtual set technology. The six contributors were integrated into the live program using at-home REMI kits that were designed and engineered by Broadcast Management Group’s system integration division. In order to add a layer of engagement with at-home viewers, the program integrated live questions via Twitter and Facebook as well as pre-submitted video questions. BMG’s creative division developed the show format, show rundown, designed all virtual sets, and created all show graphics for the town hall.

BMG used one Infinity Set renderer together with a traditional control room to cut the show. Studio camera feeds were Panasonic AW-UE150 PTZ cameras, and the remote feeds were brought in utilizing LiveU.

Optimizing production costs with InfinitySet Lite

First Class is an entertainment TV show broadcasted by CCTV, the Chinese public television, each year in the evening of September 1st, coinciding with the first day of classes for the Primary School students.

First Class is an educational show that takes place once a year, and as the Chinese government suggests that students should watch it, this contributes in making it one of the most viewed and relevant shows on CCTV, reaching extremely high audience ratings year after year. This 2019, CCTV chose Camkoon as the production company, mainly in charge of the augmented reality and graphics content.

Camkoon is one of the most important and renowned production companies in the Chinese market, which mainly services CCTV and many regional television stations. Camkoon have a large design and support team, and their design business covers Virtual Studios, AR graphics, touch screens, videowalls, post-production, editing, finishing and much more.

For First Class, Camkoon decided to use InfinitySet as the main solution to support the show. The production used AR graphics in 3 different parts of the show. The first is a song for the Chinese Mountaineering team that celebrates their achievements, so the AR is all about huge mountains. The second part is a talk show that emphasizes some of the important achievements of the Chinese space flight and aviation, and in which the anchor is Sabeining, a very famous talent in China. The third part is driven by Chinese aviation specialist Sunzezhou, who presented an interesting story about ‘Chang e’ and ‘Yu tu’, the two space rovers that landed on the Moon on the latest Chinese mission to the dark side of Earth’s satellite.

For the live show, Camkoon used two InfinitySet virtual set solutions with two tracked cameras in tripods. Most of the AR graphics were designed with Aston, which were also combined with models created with Unreal Engine for showing ‘Yu tu’ on the stage, since it featured over ten different skeleton animations, that required a combined render. This also implied that some essential models were created using PBR materials, to match the image quality of the Unreal Engine rendering. In addition to the tracked tripods, Camkoon also used InfinitySet’s TeleTransporter to simulate crane camera flies during the show.
