The Daytime Emmy Awards are an American accolade bestowed by the New York–based National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) in recognition of excellence in American daytime television programming.

Like with many other live events, the global pandemic, along with its restrictions and safety recommendations, forced to review the way events were conceived. In 2021, the Daytime Emmy Awards organisers decided the show should remain live on- line for a second consecutive year due to uncertainty over the COVID-19 pandemic, and relied on international television production company Broadcast Management Group (BMG) and the experience the company had gained by using InfinitySet for transforming real productions into virtual live events.

BMG, leader in creating and producing live Augmented Reality broadcasts, partnered with NATAS in order to produce together two state-of-the-art live virtual Daytime Emmy Award shows. BMG executed the show using centralised technology and decentralised staffing by utilising its state-of-the-art REMI Broadcast Hub with InfinitySet in Las Vegas (Nevada), and its multi-camera REMI field packages.

BMG built two green screen sets and a hard set on location at ATI Studios in Burbank (California), with a total of five 4K PTZcameras between these 2 sets plus four studio cameras for the hard set. The team in Burbank included the show hosts, award presenters and recipients, and an extensive production crew that teamed up with the staff located in Chicago (Illinois) that included the virtual set technical director who operated the InfinitySet physically located in the BMG REMI Broadcast Hub in Las Vegas.

When faced with the challenge of creating a show to showcase the new discoveries in Sanxingdui, one of the most important archaeological sites in China, the national television CCTV decided to make the information both attractive and understandable for all audiences.

MOOV – Gossip at a new level in I’m a Celebrity… The Daily Drop

The Daily Drop is the I’m a Celebrity after show where the host Vick Hope and guests chat about the day’s events and gossip. UK leading production company MOOV created a new experience for the famous after show including virtual technology and AR.

I’m A Celebrity… The Daily Drop was a 30 minute show recorded each evening as live and then made available on the ITV Hub for fans to watch from 6am the following morning. The show was set to bring the latest gossip and exclusive content direct from the I’m a Celebrity show which took place at Gwrych Castle in Wales.

Presenter Vick Hope conducted each episode where a panel of ex-campmates and superfans debated and dissected the daily action from the camp. The main show was built within the ruins of Gwrych Castle and so the studio version in London needed to look and feel like the rest of the show.

In addition to overcoming the limitations as a result of the COVID-19, for many reasons like flexibility and cost savings the decision was made to make the studio virtual. When looking for a reliable production company capable of ensuring the quality of the content while being innovative enough to impress the audience, ITV chose MOOV.

Established in 2000, MOOV is a leading sport & events graphics company, offering an array of services and high-quality allround graphics to UK and international broadcasters. MOOV faced different challenges when producing The Daily Drop, starting with the re-creation of the main set in the castle, and continuing with the insertion of different virtual and AR content while ensuring guests were following all healthcare measures and regulations.

The studio included clips, stories and live interviews so the design needed take these into consideration. In addition, MOOV had to ensure all guests were at least 2 metres apart so they designed a large wooden floor arc to allow for this. Everything else was completely virtual, including the carpet. To cope with the requirements, MOOV suggested a fully PTZ solution based on Unreal Engine rendering and driven by Brainstorm’s InfinitySet.

‘We used Ultimatte for keying, with all the compositing in InfinitySet and in addition brought in pictures from Panasonic PTZ cameras with tracking data. Producing 18 x 30 minute episodes without a glitch was more than we could have hoped for, so I thank all the partners and team at MOOV for all their hard work in making this show a success.’ said Nev Appleton, Director and Co-founder of MOOV.

In addition to hosting the guests and presenter, the studio also needed to have the ability to display all the contestants and so the solution was to place them in context with the scenery. Their pictures were hung from the roof on medieval banners, and as people were evicted from the show, their image would become faded on the cloth.

On top of that, the centre of the floor was designed to add AR cutouts for talking points, and it also included any stats about upcoming challenges to further illustrate the evolution of the show. All the design was created and approved remotely ahead of the event. For the technical install, everything was done on-site with a very small crew, 3 people to be precise (Camera Op, VR Op & Keying / Engineer).

I’m a Celebrity… The Daily Drop resulted in an extremely well received show, both by the client and the audience, who not only followed the show live but intensively shared on social media.

TVE, including virtual revellers in social distancing times

Brainstorm was key to assisting RTVE to resolve the main problem that threatened the broadcasting of their ‘Twelve Chimes to welcome in the New Year’ program. With pandemic restrictions forbidding the large gathering typically congregating in the Puerta del Sol on New Year’s Eve, technology allowed the celebrations to go ahead for the enjoyment and entertainment of those virtually present as well as the large number of viewers who tuned in. So, with the help of Brainstorm, Spain’s public broadcaster provided viewers with a “live” broadcast that brought “magic” to their screens, by filling the Puerta del Sol with virtual revellers and personalities.

In spite of the need to strictly comply with health and safety measures, the well-known celebrities, Ana Obregón and Anne Igartiburu, took part in this RTVE special program, which, thanks to Brainstorm’s technological innovations, it was possible to celebrate in a simulated spectacular fashion to the usual event on New Year’s Eve. Thanks to Brainstorm’s algorithm, some 150 video feeds of the virtual attendees were integrated from three different sources.

According to Enrique Cotillas, Deputy Director of Infographics and Graphics at TVE and director of the project, “it was a challenge for TVE to include our audience in a Puerta del Sol that would be empty this New Year’s Eve. To do this we asked our viewers to send us their images to be included in a virtual way in camera and crane movements in an empty space. The challenge was ambitious from a technical and logistical point of view for the Image Management and the technical team of TVE, but thanks to Brainstorm, who did the tracking and integration, allowing us to fill the Puerta del Sol with people as if it were a big meeting by videoconference, and Shots, who helped us in the creative part following the work of the Christmas campaign that they did for us before, the result was magnificent”.

eStudio, the power behind a long-lasting quiz show

Based on the UK format “The Alphabet Game”, Pasapalabra is, with more than 18 years on-air, one of the most veteran quiz shows in Spain. In 2007 the show started to be broadcasted by Tele 5 with Brainstorm technology.

The show is based on different games which allow two contestants, teaming up with celebrities, to accumulate seconds which then will be used in the final game, the “rosco” which is a virtual wheel with all the letters of the Spanish alphabet. There, contestants will need to answer all the definitions of the wheel, a word per each alphabet letter. What appears to be a simple game turns into a test of culture that has provided some of the highest monetary prizes in Spain’s television history, up to 2.2 million Euros.

When in 2007 Tele 5 started to broadcast the show, the production company counted with Brainstorm Production Services to create the technology for the games and eventually operate the system. This technology allowed to create new look for the show, including new animations for the games and one of the most recognizable moments of the show, the build up of the alphabet wheel, the “Rosco” in Spanish, with all the letters flying to their position. Using Brainstorm’s eStudio, the operators were able to manage the scores, drive the games, launch the sound effects and even activate a button, via GPI, to be able to know which contestant was quicker on answering a given question.

Pasapalabra even made Brainstorm to develop technological concepts such as the “Timed Undo”, a functionality that registers all the clicks and movements during the show. This is crucial in live or “live-to-tape” shows such as this, as it allows the directors to know, in case of failure or pause, the status of the show at that time, including the exact second and the current letter the contestant is at, plus the status at that time (success, mistake or pass). In the Summer of 2018, Xanela, the company that currently produces Pasapalabra, also counted with Brainstorm Production Services for the redesign of the show. Its looks were familiar and well accepted by the audience, but Xanela felt that the new season will require an updated image, while keeping the traditional look and feel the audience appreciates. By following design guidelines provided by Xanela, Brainstorm applied the new line to the existing games and, of course, the alphabet wheel. The logic of the games also required some updating on the score management, audio effects and GPI triggering, while the new graphics implied creating several new elements and updated scripting in some cases. Apart from the redesign, Xanela asked for a new requirement for controlling the studio lights via GPI, so when a contestant scores or fails the general lighting turns red or green accordingly, which is reflected in the public. Also, some design and animation changes in the alphabet wheel required some additional scripting, coupled with visually updated letter containers. Amazingly enough, Pasapalabra is controlled by an extremely simple workflow, involving a single HP workstation with an AJA video board and a GPI card. The eStudio software takes care for the graphics, animations, scores, sound effects and GPI triggering for the whole show.
